Debre Libanos
A monastery on the edge of the Blue Nile gorge, a day from Addis.
Debre Libanos monastery stands on the rim of the Jemma river gorge, about a two-hour drive north of Addis Ababa. The 16th-century saint Tekle Haymanot is buried in the tradition of this house. A newer church, a museum, and a short walk to the Portuguese bridge fill the visit. Gelada baboons use the cliff.
Most people do it as a day trip from Addis and sleep back in the capital. A few guesthouses sit near the monastery if you want sunrise over the gorge.
